Detail from Sands of Time

Growing up in the east end of London just after the war, we naturally began to knit. I continued knitting and sewing through school, college and work, until over thirty years ago I was introduced to, and captivated by creative embroidery.
Fifteen years ago, finding hand-stitching increasingly hard on my eyes, I acquired a page of instructions on making ‘silk paper’. I have been experimenting with this medium ever since, exploring my feelings about growing older, and my life battling with migraine.
A few years ago – finding that there was no longer enough light to free-machine during the dark winter months – I turned again to knitting, intending to knit only a few scarves and the occasional hat!

Di is a founder member of Fusion, a member of the Embroiderers Guild and Embroidery 15, and has taught both children and adults creative embroidery.
